Medical Monitoring Networks Get Personal
When computers, servers and digital storage devices began to find their way en masse into businesses and homes in the late 1970s and early 80s, industrious users figured out these systems could be linked together into local area networks (LANs) that enabled the rapid exchange of information from machine to machine. Medical technology makers are now hoping to scale this model down to the personal level by connecting wireless sensors placed on (or even under) a patient's skin to create "medical body area networks" (MBANs) that provide doctors with real-time info about their patients. Thieves include themselves in the digital revolution
At least the computers stolen from a taskforce trying to get more people online will be used by someoneThe office of the Digital Inclusion Team, set up to get more people in the UK online, was broken into this morning in a rather more direct encouragement of computer use than the government intended.Computers were stolen in the raid, which could set back the team's aim of getting 6 million more people online in the next two years. The silver lining may be that at least the thieves will now be included, digitally.Martha Lane Fox, the government's champion for digital inclusion, broke the news on Twitter this morning: 'O bloody hell the #digitalinclusion office has been broken into and all computers taken :((.'She declined to elaborate further when contacted by the Guardian. The news quickly spread on Twitter, with more than one user remarking on the irony. Blizzard Offers Look Inside WoW At GDC
Yesterday morning at GDC Austin, Blizzard's J. Allen Brack and Frank Pearce took to the stage to finally give a peek inside the inner workings of World of Warcraft. Tipping the scales at around 4600 people utilizing 20,000 computer systems, and 1.3 petabytes of storage, Blizzard has created a raging behemoth. The Online Network services group alone has 'data centers from Texas to Seoul, and monitor over 13,250 server blades, 75,000 cpu cores, and 112.5 terabytes of blade RAM. [Pearce] points out the picture of the GNOC (Global Network Operations Center) in their slideshow, a data core that even has televisions tuned to the weather stations. They use those to ensure that conditions of the data center are up to their standards; with only a staff of 68 people they ensure connectivity across the globe for the numerous WoW servers.' of this story at Slashdot.
