AT&T Launches 3G MicroCell Site
AT&T inches closer towards broad availability of its femtocell: Details of 3G MicroCell, an in-home base station for the AT&T network, have been floating around for months. What wasn't known was when the company was planning to expand its test program into commercial availability. With the launch of a detailed Web site describing all the advantages--but also with a Zip code availability checker--the company is moving far closer to release. The idea of a femtocell is to have a broadband-connected tiny base station in the home that allows an existing cellular handset to work without any modification. Sprint pairs its femtocell with an unlimited call options ($100 purchase price plus $5/mo for the base station's use and $10 additional/mo for unlimited calls). Verizon offers just the signal-strength improvements ($250). T-Mobile employs UMA, which requires one of many dual-mode UMA handsets that the company offers, but works over plain Wi-Fi. The 3G MicroCell is unique in that Sprint and

Google Chrome Is a Lock for 10% Share, but How Much More?
Google Chrome could easily reach 10 percent market share by 2011, but it could do more than that by being bundled with PCs by Sony, HP, Dell and Lenovo. Every analyst eWEEK polled said that while the Sony deal gives Google a toehold in PC bundling, it isn't enough for Google and high-tech watchers to get excited over. PC manufacturers, which have nothing but dumb boxes of metal, plastic and silicon without an OS to support them, could fear spurning microsoft by going with Chrome. - Google's Chrome Web browser is generating heady excitement these days, particularly after the search and Web services giant Sept. 15 put Chrome 3.0 into stable release. Net Applications said Chrome cultivated 2.84 percent worldwide market share through August, hardly burning up the browser market v...

Paraplegic Rats Enabled To ``Walk`` Again
eldavojohn notes a paper released in Nature Neuroscience today describing work in which paraplegic rats were enabled to walk again as early as a week after injury and treatment. The process involves a serotonin-influencing drug and electrical stimulation of the spine, along with an incentive to the paralyzed back legs to move — namely, being placed a treadmill. Soon a poorly understood spinal mechanism called the 'central pattern generator' kicks in and the rats' legs move under the stimulus of a rhythmic signal from the spine (the brain is not involved). Eurekalert reports, 'Daily treadmill training over several weeks eventually enabled the rats to regain full weight-bearing walking, including backwards, sideways and at running speed. However, the injury still interrupted the brain's connection to the spinal cord-based rhythmic walking circuitry, leaving the rats unable to walk of their own accord.' of this story at Slashdot.
