Google Researchers Warn of Automated Social Info Sharing
holy_calamity writes 'Researchers from Google have written a paper about how social networks can undermine privacy. The most interesting scenario they discuss is 'merging social graphs' — when correlating multiple social networks makes it possible to reveal connections that a person has intentionally kept secret (PDF). For example, it may be possible to work out that a certain LinkedIn user is the same person as a MySpace user, despite their attempting to keep their profiles separate. The Google solution is to develop software that screens new data added to a social network, attempting to find out if it could be fodder to such data mining.' of this story at Slashdot.

On Games, Google and Geeks` T-Shirt Sizes
You know it's a good week on the blogs when one of the top stories on Digg is a graph of Linux users' T-shirt sizes. Yes indeed, said graph -- comparing the sizes of attendees at the Linux Symposium in 1999 with those of last year's participants -- drew some 800 Diggs and 100 comments on the site, not to mention providing fodder for endless entertainment.

Google Releases Chrome 2.0 Pre-Beta
Nick Fletcher writes 'Just a few short months after the initial release, Google has released a pre-beta version of Google Chrome 2.0. It sports a few new features including form auto-completion, full-page zoom, 'profiles', and Greasemonkey support. It seems the only notable feature would be profiles, which allows users to separate out their homepage, history, and bookmarks on a per user or category basis. It seems Google is still playing catch-up but they're definitely moving at a pace unknown to some of their competition. The full list of new features is available in the release notes.' of this story at Slashdot.

Workers give up corporate life to pursue dreams
It seems like the wrong move at the wrong time -- leaving a well-paying, secure position at a big company to pursue a dream. That's exactly what a new breed of workers is doing. 'As hokey as it sounds, there's more to life than money,' says former Google employee Vanessa Fox.

The Inexact Science of Carbon Neutrality
snydeq writes 'Sustainable IT's Ted Samson raises questions regarding the purchasing of carbon offsets, a practice growing in popularity among tech companies such as Dell, Yahoo, and Google in an attempt to achieve 'carbon neutrality.' Essentially financial instruments, carbon offsets enable companies to invest money in sustainable endeavors in an attempt to counteract the carbon footprint they incur conducting their business. But as a recent article in the Wall Street Journal shows, measuring the value of these carbon offsets is tricky business, as some recipients of offsets say the results of their sustainable efforts would be achieved regardless of any one company's investment. 'The question of whether carbon offsets hold value just scratches the surface of the overall carbon-neutrality question,' Samson writes. 'For the time being, there isn't even a consistent approach to measuring an organization's carbon footprint in the first place. And if you don't know how much CO2 you're res
