Did a Seismologist Accurately Forecast the L`Aquila Earthquake--Or Was It a Lucky Guess?
Yesterday, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck L'Aquila, Italy, killing more than 150 people, injuring some 1,000, and leaving thousands of people homeless. Soon after the deadly temblor hit, news outlets including Time magazine, Reuters, and The New York Times reported Italian authorities had previously removed from the Internet a warning that a big quake was imminent. The prediction had been posted weeks earlier by a seismologist at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Abruzzi, Italy. [More]

Segway and GM show Puma electric car
The world could certainly use a cheap electric personal transportation system, but whether or not it's the Puma remains to be seenHere's one I didn't see coming: Segway and GM have announced that they are developing a Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility vehicle, or Puma. The official site has pictures and videos, but it looks like a bigger version of the familiar Segway scooter with a cab on top. According to the AP report:The 300-pound prototype runs on a lithium-ion battery and uses Segway's characteristic two-wheel balancing technology, along with dual electric motors. It's designed to reach speeds of up to 35 miles-per-hour and can run 35 miles on a single charge. The 35mph top speed means it's a road vehicle, not something you'd want to allow on pavements. At the moment, however, GM has not decided to put the thing into production.Autoblog says: 'The P.U.M.A. projec

10 Important Atmospheric Science Experiments
It seems like every day atmospheric scientists unload a new set of scary predictions about gases swirling about the planet. There are brown clouds, volatile organic compounds, methane, ozone, sulfur and, of course, big daddy carbon dioxide. All of them seem very big and all of them are getting worse. Many of these news stories, however, are based on computer modeling, which, nifty as it may be, can only display a small slice of our best guess of what atmospheric chemistry has in store for us. These models are based on experiments taken by scientists in a dazzling array of different laboratory techniques. [More]

Cutting out sugary drinks helps weight loss
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - When it comes to losing weight, what you drink may be more important than what you eat, according to new research; it shows that cutting back on sugar-laden drinks is associated with weight loss and seems to have a bigger impact on weight than cutting back on solid foods.
