`The future is going to be very exciting`
The head of Google's new university, Ray Kurzweil believes the advance of technology will solve the energy crisis, upgrade the human genome and even lead to everlasting life - no wonder he is so optimisticRay Kurzweil has a surrealist's eye for disorientation. The lobby of his offices outside Boston have the quality of a Dadaist art gallery: nothing is quite what it seems. Immediately inside the door is an old metal box that turns out to be a dictation machine built by Thomas Edison. An old man is sitting next to it, with a badge on his lapel that reads: 'I'm an inventor'. He is George, the receptionist tells me, and he is made of wax. A cabinet along the hall is covered entirely in boxes of vitamin pills, hundreds of them, from acai berry, red yeast rice and milk thistle to a very large jar marked 'Anti-ageing multi-pack'.The sensation of strangeness intensifies inside Kurzweil's personal office. Several handwritten placards are stacked against the wall. 'NO RIGHTS FOR BOTS!' says one

Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 Released, Supports ODF Out of the Box
shutdown -p now writes 'On April 28, Microsoft released service pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2007. Among other changes, it includes the earlier-promised support for ODF text documents and spreadsheets, featured prominently on the 'Save As' menu alongside Office Open XML and the legacy Office 97-2007 formats. It is also possible to configure Office applications to use ODF as the default format for new documents. In addition, the service pack also includes 'Save as PDF' out of the box, and better Firefox support by SharePoint.' of this story at Slashdot.

Treating the Web As an Archive
An anonymous reader sends a link to a blog post by David Eaves discussing how the ease of finding information on the web affects how we analyze history. '... nothing is different per se — the same old research methods will be used — but what if it is 10 times easier to do, 100 times faster and contains a million times the quantity of information? With the archives of newspapers, blogs and other websites readily available to be searched, the types of research once reserved for only the most diligent and patient might be more broadly accessible.' As an example, he points to an almost 10-year-old article detailing the events surrounding the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which some believe was a significant contributing factor to the current financial crisis. of this story at Slashdot.

Mass Effect coming to iPhone and iPod touch
BioWare has announced that it is working on bringing its Mass Effect game to the iPhone and iPod touch. The game is based on the same Mass Effect universe featured in the Xbox 360 and Windows editions, although the story does not bridge Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. Rather, it offers a side-story surrounding a character from the upcoming version. The developers claim it is not 'required reading...

The In-House Decency Patrol at Facebook
theodp writes 'How'd you like a job where you get fired if you DON'T view porn at work? Newsweek reports on Facebook's internal police force of 150 staffers who are charged with regulating users' decorum, hunting spammers and working with actual law-enforcement agencies to help solve crimes. Part hall monitors, part vice cops, the $50,000-a-year 'porn cops' also keep Facebook safe for corporate advertisers.' of this story at Slashdot.
