Chief whip first to volunteer full expenses
Minister on relatively firm ground compared with some of his colleagues and opponentsNick Brown, the government chief whip, yesterday became the first MP to voluntarily release the full, unedited details of his expenses in advance of publication by parliament. The minister knew he would be on firm ground as, unlike some of his colleagues, he had not claimed a penny for furniture from the taxpayer over the last four years. The only two major disputes he had with the Commons authorities concerned his employment of staff. Nortel prepares for break-up as Q1 sales fall 37%
(Telecompaper) Nortel's first-quarter revenues fell 37 percent from a year earlier to USD 1.37 billion, as the network equipment maker suffered from the economic slowdown and its filing for protection from creditors. Excluding negative currency effects, revenues dropped 27 percent. Despite a reduction in operating expenses, the net loss widened to USD 507 million, versus a loss of USD 108 million a year ago. Nortel finished the quarter with USD 2.48 billion in cash, up from USD 2.40 billion at the end of 2008 due to some USD 242 million in cash flow from operations during the quarter. Nortel said it's focused on completing the move to standalone operations for all its four divisions - Carrier Networks, Metro Ethernet Networks, Enterprise Solutions and the LG-Nortel joint-venture. From Q3, the Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions units, currently part of Carrier Networks, will also start to report as standalone entities.
