Cameron acts on excess after moat claim
Bold apology and swift action to make MPs pay back money to taxpayer could be watershed moment for party leaderIt was while travelling back to London by train on Monday afternoon that David Cameron realised he was facing a defining moment in his leadership of the Conservative party.A few hours after telling Radio Derby that he would take action against errant MPs, Cameron was warned on his mobile phone that one grandee had made an extraordinary claim that could imperil his entire modernisation of the party. The third Viscount Hailsham, best known as the former agriculture minister Douglas Hogg, who wore a cranky hat during the BSE crisis, had claimed for the cleaning of a moat around his 13th-century manor house in Lincolnshire.'The moat was the turning point,' one aide said. Illusion Cloak Makes One Object Look Like Another
KentuckyFC writes 'Metamaterials are synthetic substances that can steer light in any way imaginable. Their most famous incarnation is in invisibility cloaks which work by steering light around a region of space making any object inside that region invisible. But invisibility is just the start. A team of physicists in Hong Kong (the same guys who recently worked out how to cloak objects at a distance) have worked out how create a cloak that makes one object look like another. Instead of steering light to make a region of space look empty, the illusion cloak manipulates light in a way that makes a region of space look as if it contains a specific object, such as an elephant. So any object within that region of space, a mouse say, takes on the appearance of an elephant.' of this story at Slashdot.

James Randi prize: Paranormal claims put to the test
Professional medium Patricia Putt was last week subjected to a rigorous scientific test of her powers as the first stage of her bid to claim a $1m prize from the James Randi Educational FoundationThe young female volunteer in front of me could not suppress an embarrassed giggle as she sat there wearing a ski mask, wraparound sunglasses, an oversized graduation gown and a pair of white socks, a large laminated sheet hung around her neck displaying her participant number. Then things got even weirder. Professor Richard Wiseman knocked on the door to collect our volunteer. He accompanied her into a large room where she was instructed to sit in a chair facing the wall and do nothing for 15 minutes or so. Professional medium Mrs Patricia Putt was then brought into the room and sat down at a small table around 12 feet away. Sometimes Mrs Putt would request that a volunteer read a pre-specified short passage, as she had found from past experience that often 'the Spirit enters and makes contact
