US climate bill seen as a step forward
The first concrete steps by Congress to fulfil Barack Obama's promise to green America's economy were seen around the world today as a significant step forward, though they remain far short of what scientists say is needed to solve global warming.Democratic leaders in Congress said yesterdaytoday they had defied conventional wisdom that they would be unable to persuade representatives from oil and coal, rust belt and southern states to support a bill. The slightly weakened draft now calls for a 17% cut in greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 2020. 'It's a legislative Susan Boyle. Everyone underestimated it until it started to sing,' said Ed Markey, who chairs the subcommittee on climate change.Democrats hope to finish the draft in a week. Their initial compromise fell short of what some environmentalists in the US and in the international community hoped for. They said it failed to send a strong enough signal of the US commitment to action and would undermine efforts to reach

Why aide to Tory leader had to resign
Aide to Tory leader thought his expenses were squeaky clean. Times have changed. He may have to repay a six-figure sumAndrew MacKay was in a relaxed mood on Wednesday afternoon when he dropped into David Cameron's suite of offices at Westminster to hand over a thick bundle of papers containing his parliamentary expenses. 'Don't worry, there are no swimming pools there,' the veteran MP joked as he became the latest in a series of shadow ministers and senior advisers who agreed to open up their expenses for inspection.Cameron had asked his shadow cabinet and the likes of MacKay, who served as his senior parliamentary adviser, to hand over their expenses because a special Tory scrutiny committee will not be established until next week.MacKay returned to his grand terrace house near Westminster on Wednesday night, which he shares with his wife and fellow Tory MP Julie Kirkbride, thinking he had nothing to worry about. 'Andrew thought his expenses were squeaky clean,' one Tory said. Then, l

Premiere to become Sky Deutschland, net loss grows
(Telecompaper) German pay-TV operator Premiere will launch a new pay TV service in July of this year, which will be called Sky and will replace the existing Premiere service at launch. The name change will be done in Austria and Germany. Subject to approval by shareholders at the Annual General Meeting, the name of the company will be changed from Premiere AG to Sky Deutschland AG. As a result of the decision by the Management Board with the approval of the Supervisory Board to discontinue the use of the Premiere brand, the value of the Premiere trademark will be written off in the second quarter of this year. The impact on net profit will be negative EUR 256.1 million, comprising the write-off of EUR 331.6 million offset by a release of deferred tax liabilities of EUR 75.5 million. The name change will have no impact on existing customer contracts. Nevertheless, all existing customers will have the opportunity to adopt the new services when Sky launches in July. The company plans to u

`Slumdog Millionaire` child star`s home razed
'Slumdog Millionaire' leaves audiences uplifted. But that is hardly how one of its child stars felt. Despite the hit movie's mega-millions in box-office receipts, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail's life changed little after he returned home to Mumbai, India's, Garib Nagar, or city of the poor. Even the roof over the real-life slum dweller's head was taken away.

Tuning Up Car Engines
[Below is the original script. Some changes may have been made during the recording of this audio podcast.]In the U.S. alone, our cars' tailpipes spew some 1.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This is a big part of why our global climate is changing. But there are a lot of ways to cut back on that pollution--without switching to alternative fuels or electric cars. [More]
