Oi revenues up 3.5% in Q1, earnings down
(Telecompaper) Brazilian operator Oi reported first-quarter net revenue of BRL 7.487 billion, up 3.5 percent from the year-earlier period. Fixed-line gross revenues rose 3.6 percent to BRL 8.97 billion, and mobile revenues increased 28.4 percent to BRL 2.2 billion. EBITDA dropped to BRL 2.191 billion versus BRL 2.548 in March 2008, while net earnings of BRL 10 million were down from BRL 564 a year ago due to higher financing costs. Revenue-generating units increased by 1.7 million versus December 2008 and 10.3 million since March 2008 to a total 57.7 million. The mobile activities added a net 1.8 million customers in Q1, taking the total base to 31.8 million, up 6.1 percent in the quarter and 45.3 percent versus March 2008. Prepaid additions accounted for 90 percent of the total, while the 26,857 new postpaid users were helped by the new Oi Ligadores campaign.
