Cameron is told EU policy spells disaster
German MEP warns Tories of losing influence if they quit centre-right ranksDavid Cameron came under attack over his European policy last night when the president of the European parliament said that if it were put into effect it would be a 'tragedy' for Britain and Europe which would leave a Conservative government with no influence in the EU.The intervention by Hans-Gert Pöttering came ahead of Cameron's launch tomorrow of the Conservatives' European election campaign, at which the Tory leader will renew a controversial pledge to quit the main centre-right group in the parliament, the European People's party (EPP), within weeks.Pöttering, a German Christian Democrat and former head of the EPP, told the Observer: 'David Cameron risks making a very serious error of judgment in leaving the group. Crucially, the butchery was similar to that used by humans to cut up deer carcass in the early Stone Age. 'Neanderthals met a violent end at our hands and in some cases we ate them,' Rozzi said. The idea will provoke considerable opposition from scientists who believe Neanderth

America has signalled it wants solutions in the Middle East, but are the president's guests ready to make concessions?Late tomorrow morning President Barack Obama will welcome israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, into the Oval Office at the White House. Leave five minutes for the pleasantries, 30 seconds for the coffee to be poured, and 84 and a half minutes will remain to kick-start what is perhaps the most ambitious bid to bring peace to the Middle East for nearly a decade.Once again, true to his campaign motto of 'Yes we can', Obama is boldly plunging in where others fear to tread. May will see an extraordinary series of meetings for the new president: Netanyahu will be followed to the White House by President Mubarak of Egypt and Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian National Authority.
