Time for state funding, says Purnell
Work secretary risks clash with unions over bid to take 'big money' out of politicsBritain's leaders should 'bite the bullet' and endorse state funding of political parties as part of an overhaul to remove 'big money' from the system, the work and pensions secretary, James Purnell, declares today. In the latest high-profile contribution to the Guardian's A New Politics series, the cabinet minister calls for individual donations to be capped at a few hundred pounds - a move that would transform Labour's links with the trade unions.Making the first intervention by a member of the cabinet on the contentious issue of party funding, Purnell says: 'We need to take big money out of politics.' He writes: 'Amidst the current anger at politicians and politics we must bite the bullet on state funding for political parties - alongside cutting the overall amount the taxpayer spends on politics.'Within a reduction in the overall amount spent, Purnell would like to see the state fund staff in constitu

Time Warner Confirms Split With AOL
ausekilis writes 'Many outlets are reporting that Time Warner has confirmed plans to spin off AOL. All that's left to deal with are a few financial hurdles, such as buying out Google's 5% stake in AOL. The interesting part of the story is that both AOL's CEO and Time Warner's CEO said effectively the same thing, that AOL will be better off as an independent unit, as opposed to 'a cog in the Time Warner wheel.' Interesting to note that when they originally merged, the idea was for AOL to be a one-stop shop for all your internet goods. Makes you wonder what would have happened if Time Warner had invested in AOL as an exclusive media outlet for movies, TV, music, etc. Perhaps AOL would have regained some speed and become the prominent household name it once was, instead of being that company who sent us all the free coasters.' of this story at Slashdot.

OLPC Spinoff Pixel Qi Merges E-ink With LCD
MaryBethP writes with some tasty prototype photos and info about the new OLPC spin off 'Pixel Qi' that is combining the best of e-ink and traditional LCD displays. 'The screen can work as a traditional backlit LCD when indoors, can have that backlight disabled to be perfectly visible outdoors (shown after the break), and, as its pièce de résistance, can be toggled into an energy-efficient 'epaper' mode. How exactly the company is fitting these seemingly disparate slices of technology into a single 10.1-inch screen is something of a mystery, but we're guessing much will be answered next week ahead of a planned product launch by the end of the year. Color us intrigued.' of this story at Slashdot.
