Is Online Learning a Solution for Cash-Strapped California Schools?
In the state that gave the world Facebook, Google and the iPod, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says forcing California's students to rely on printed textbooks is so yesterday. The governor recently launched an initiative to see if the state's 6 million public school students can use more online learning materials, perhaps saving millions of dollars a year in textbook purchases.

`Hangover` still buzzing at box office
Film News: Warner Bros. comedy nabs $10.44 million Friday -- Warner Bros. woke up to discover that its hit comedy 'The Hangover' held on to the number one box office spot in its second Friday, grossing an estimated $10.44 million at 3,355 venues. After posting strong midweek figures, the second Friday for 'The Hangover' dipped 38%, giving the laffer a running eight-day cume of $82.4 million. Even though 'The Hangover' is largely attracting the male demo, film's running B.O. is almost on par with that of last summer's R-rated comedy champ 'Sex and the City' which raked $85.3 million from the female set in its first eight days. Disney-Pixar's 'Up' stayed afloat in second place dipping just 33% in its third Friday with $8.8 million from 3,886 theaters. Similar to last weekend, there could be another close call for the number one spot between 'The Hangover' and 'Up' once moppet matinees are factored in favor of the Disney-Pixar release. Nonetheless, both titles are maintaining solid ho

YouTube, HTML5, and Comparing H.264 With Theora
David Gerard writes 'Google Chrome includes Ogg support for the element. It also includes support for the hideously encumbered H.264 format. Nice as an extra, but ... they're also testing HTML5 YouTube only for H.264 — meaning the largest video provider on the Net will make H.264 the primary codec and relegate the equally good open format Ogg/Theora firmly to the sidelines. Mike Shaver from Mozilla has fairly unambiguously asked Chris DiBona from Google what the heck Google thinks it's doing.' DiBona responded with concerns that switching to Theora while maintaining quality would take up an incredible amount of bandwidth for a site like YouTube, though he made clear his support for the continued improvement of the project. Greg Maxwell jumped into the debate by comparing the quality of Ogg/Theora+Vorbis with the current YouTube implementations using H.263+MP3 and H.264+AAC. At the lower bitrate, Theora seems to have the clear edge, while the higher bitrate may slightly favor H.2

Blimps Monitor Crowds At Sporting Events
Death Metal tips news about how defense contractor Raytheon is adapting military-style surveillance packages for use aboard blimps at public events like the Indy 500. 'Until recently, Raytheon's eye-in-the-sky technology was used in Afghanistan and Iraq to guard American military bases, working as airborne guards against any oncoming desert threat. Using infrared sensors and a map overlay not unlike Google Earth, the technology scans a large area, setting important landmarks (say, the perimeter of a military base), and constantly relays video clips back to a command center. If a gun fires or a bomb is detonated, the airships can detect the noise and focus the camera — all from a mighty-high 500 feet.' Though the technology is expensive, Raytheon is shopping it around to police departments and other organizations that might want to keep an eye on large gatherings of people. of this story at Slashdot.
