Vietnam Burning: Warfare Scorched the Land for 1,500 Years
Sifting through layers of sediment in Vietnam's Song Hong Delta, researchers weren't surprised to find charred evidence of ancient fires after several cultures migrated there about 5,000 years ago. Cycles of early blazes are tied to changes in the climate, when the area dried out, as well as to agriculture, as a means to clear land for planting. But what could explain a surge in singed land throughout the past 1,500 years? [More]

Screenshots: Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview
The Microsoft Office 2010 technical preview, which we brought you a sneak peak at a few months back, is officially available today through invite only and -- though it's not in its final form -- there are plenty of feature enhancements to be excited about, if Microsoft can pull it off. According to Microsoft, the focus of this update was on three things: to make work flows more efficient, to effectively use Web applications to make your work available anywhere, and to make collaboration with others much easier. In this preview from our colleagues at CNET Download, we'll take a look at some of the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let you use your PC, phone and the Web to make your projects come together more efficiently. From what we've seen, they might be right -- and the Web applications might also give Google Docs a run for their money.

Pandora Wants Radio Stations To Pay For Music, Too
suraj.sun sends along an Ars writeup of the lobbying Pandora is doing now that it has secured its future, royalties-wise. Some might think it odd that Pandora is weighing in on the side of the record labels in their fight to get radio stations to pay more for the music they broadcast. 'US radio stations don't pay performers and producers for the music they play, but the recording industry hopes to change that with a new performance rights bill in Congress. Webcaster Pandora has jumped into the fray on the side of the artists and labels, asking why radio gets a free ride when Pandora does not. ... With revenues from recorded music sales declining, rights-holders have turned their eyes in recent years to commercial US radio, which currently pays songwriters (but not performers or record labels)... With its own future secure for the next few years, Pandora is now turning its attention to the public performance debate here in the US, saying that the issue is a simple matter of fairness: wh

Google plots separate futures for Android and Chrome OS
Among the many questions raised in the wake of Google's announcement of Chrome OS is exactly how the project fits in with its Android mobile operating system. Essentially, nothing has changed, said Google's Andy Rubin (pictured) at a US press conference on Friday for the launch of the new Android-powered T-Mobile MyTouch 3G smart phone, known in the UK as the HTC Hero. "You need different technology for different products," Rubin said, explaining Google's approach to product development means projects that might overlap aren't necessarily scuttled to protect the one that got there first. Android is first and foremost a smart-phone operating system, found on products such as the new Hero and the older Magic and G1. But companies such as Acer and Asus are planning to put Android on netbooks later this year, and several others are rumoured to be following suit.
