In praise of . wasps
Wasps - the small stinging creatures, rather than the London rugby club or some posh east coast Americans - have a poor public image. Overshadowed by the recent troubles of their more cuddly cousin the honeybee, wasps are normally seen as one of nature's blacker jokes. Yet their ecological importance is undisputed. Google the latest victim of malicious online attacks
Millions of users affected as Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal and Google are attackedA concerted attempt to crash a string of major websites appears to be underway, with malicious online attacks affecting services including Facebook, Twitter and Google. The source of the strikes is not yet known, but they have already affected hundreds of millions of web users around the world.Initial reports earlier today confirmed that Twitter had been affected by a denial of service attack, where vast numbers of computers are simultaneously pointed at a victim's website in order to overwhelm its servers. But after reports that Facebook was suffering from unexpected problems, it has emerged that several major companies were also victims of a simultaneous attack, including some Google sites and the blogging service LiveJournal.A Google spokesman said that the company's systems helped protect it from damage, and that neither Google.com nor Gmail suffered any impact: 'We are in contact with some affected

Twitter down: Blames hack attack
Twitter was inaccessible for several hours on Thursday afternoon, followed by a period of slowness and sporadic timeouts (and more outright downtime). the company is blaming an "ongoing" denial-of-service (DOS) attack but has not said anything further. Judging by the timeline of our TweetDeck client, it looks like the problems started right around 2pm BST. "We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly," Twitter's staff posted at 2:43pm on the service's status blog.
