Poll find confidence in economy surging
Britons feel increasingly optimisic about the economy but Gordon Brown is failing to reap the benefitGordon Brown's hopes of a late fightback based on recovery from recession have been dashed today by a new poll showing that economic confidence is surging back - but Labour is not reaping the benefit. The Ipsos MORI research shows the proportion of people expecting the economy to improve in the next 12 months has staged the biggest recovery in nearly three decades of polling, with 43% of Britons now believing the UK is emerging from recession compared with just 7% in spring 2008.The findings will be welcomed on the high Street and in the property market, with consumers more likely to spend when they have faith in their future prosperity. Optimism was strongest among the middle classes and southerners. However, poll analysis shows that Brown's ratings have actually fallen as confidence in economic 'green shoots' grows, with the Tories now on 43% of the vote - representing a 17-point lead

Pledge to get teens off dole and into work
Yvette Cooper sees hope for vacancies in retail sector as optimism grows for high Street recoveryGordon Brown will this week bring forward a pledge to rescue young people from the dole queue amid signs that youth unemployment has not risen as fast as feared. The prime minister will try to regain the momentum over the economy by detailing plans to guarantee a job for anyone aged 18-24 who is out of work for more than 10 months, rather than for a year as previously planned.Yvette Cooper, the secretary of state for work and pensions, yesterday disclosed that retail is one of the sectors where the government is expecting more vacancies to be created in the coming months, in a surprising hint of optimism about the embattled high Street.Although youth unemployment has now hit 17.2%, that is lower than was envisaged this spring at the height of anxiety about the impact of the recession, leaving spare capacity in funding allocated to helping the young unemployed. around 60% are getting work th

Kidnap man wired to drugs and God
Phillip Garrido, the man charged with abducting Jaycee Lee Dugard, was known to his neighbours in Antioch, California, as 'creepy Phil'. Garrido spent the 1970s tripping on LSD, smoking pot and bingeing on cocaine. Then he found religion. If Phillip Garrido hadn't found God, then the law wouldn't have found him. And neither would Antioch, a small California commuter town outside san francisco, have found itself the unwelcome focus of the world's attention. With a population of 100,000, the town is more used to local newspapers running folksy stories about clever cats and custom car rallies than the current frenzy of exclusives chronicling kidnapping and paedophilia. As police combed the 58-year-old Garrido's squat bungalow yesterday for clues that may link him to the murder of local prostitutes, further disturbing details of his mental state emerged, helping paint a picture of a man, part-messiah claimant, part bombed-out refugee of California's hippie past.Garrido, it emerged, was a man

Yu-Gi-Oh takes to the streets in Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s wheelie breakers for the Nintendo Wii. The concept of this title is similar to Mario Kart as you race around a track picking up floating squares that give you random playable “cards” from your hand that can summon creatures and perform speed boosts and various other benefits. President Obama leads political elite at Kennedy`s funeral
A roll call of american presidents gather to pay their respects at Edward Kennedy's funeral with politicians from around the worldAt six o'clock yesterday morning, the streets around the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston were already being closed off. New metal barriers were erected by the minute, each possible path blocked by every conceivable branch of police - city, state, FBI - as black-coated members of the secret service huddled beneath umbrellas in the bleak rainy dawn. The mission Church, as the 19th-century building is locally known, towers over modest red-brick and wood-frame houses in a district that is as unpretentious as it is diverse. The people who live there hung signs in the windows - or just wrote impromptu messages with their fingers on the misted-up glass - honouring the man who had caused the streets to close: 'Thank you, Senator Kennedy.'Edward M Kennedy, who died of brain cancer on Tuesday at the age of 77, was a man who made it his life's work to,
