Child poverty reduced if both parents go to work Campaigners worried that strategy could have serious effects on family lifeBoth parents in families living below the breadline will be urged to go to work to lift their children out of poverty, one of the ministers responsible for developing the government's child poverty strategy said yesterday.Conceding that it was now unlikely New Labour's pledge to halve the number of children living in poverty by 2010 would be met, the financial secretary, Stephen Timms, said the state of the economy had forced the government to rethink how best to fulfil the longer term goal of eradicating child poverty in the UK by 2020.'Smarter targeting' of those most likely to be stuck in poverty was now necessary, he said, and this would include a new focus on getting both parents in low-income families in work.Campaigners last night responded with caution, warning that pushing both parents into full-time, low-paid work could have a detrimental impact on family life and arguing that the main obstacle to gett GuardianUS urges caution on Afghan vote The US envoy to Afghanistan tells the BBC that critics of last month's presidential election should not 'jump to conclusions'. BBCInformation technology and its impact on stock returns and trading volume This study investigates the impact of information technology on common stock returns and trading volume. By focusing mainly on the peak period of the hi-tech phenomenon, the findings imply that the market response to website launching is positive. During the event day and the two preceding days, the abnormal stock return and the abnormal trading volume both are positive and statistically significant. In particular, the impact is stronger for non-US firms than for domestic companies, for initial rather than subsequent site launches, for those sites that are launched on Monday rather than on other days of the week, and for innovative industries such as electronics and computers. As expected, while the launch of a website had a stronger effect at the beginning of the hi-tech phenomenon, the impact has diminished in later years. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
