Microsoft Files Suits Against ``Malvertisers``
eldavojohn writes 'Reuters is bringing us news of five civil lawsuits filed by Microsoft against 'Soft Solutions,' 'Direct Ad,' 'qiweroqw.com,' 'ITmeter Inc,' and 'ote2008.info' that allege they 'used malvertisements to distribute malicious software or present deceptive websites that peddled scareware to unsuspecting internet users.' Microsoft's Tim Cranton outlined the suits and provided links to all the filings for download. 'Cranton added that names of specific individuals behind these activities were not known and the lawsuits were being filed to help uncover the people responsible.'' of this story at Slashdot.

£99 box gives you online Windows
Clive Akass, Personal Computer World, Wednesday 17 June 2009 at 15:43:00 Thn client offers direct access to rent-an-app site Online Windows desktop site Nivio is launching a neat little box a little smaller than a paperback that access its services directly and appears to the user as a standard PC. The £99 Nivio Companion can be bolted to the back of a VESA-standard monitor, but founder Sachin Duggal says: 'Most people thinks it looks too good to hide away.' Nivio is offering a 15in LCD monitor for £50 extra. the company says it offers homes and businesses an alternative to purchasing software such as Microsoft Office and running a expensive PC. Users can instead use a Windows desktop and applications running on a remote server. The basic service, which includes 10GB of storage, costs £4.66 a month and Microsoft Office (home edition) costs £2.50 a month. You can also rent other applications by the month - if you don't use them in a month you do not get charged. Duggal says t

The Ho-Hum Sound of Google Voice
Google gives away a lot of good stuff for free. That struck me last year when I downloaded the free Google Maps app to my smartphone. It turned the phone into a handy navigation system and killed my desire to buy a $100 standalone GPS unit. So I was intrigued to try Google Voice. That is a service that gives you one phone number that connects to all of your phones.

Road test: AT&T Navigator GPS iPhone application
So far I've tested four flat-fee GPS applications for the iPhone with built-in offline maps: Navigon, iGo My Way, TomTom, and CoPilot Live. They all have pros and cons, but they share a few common shortcomings: a lack of real-time traffic, no support for text-to-speech (except for Navigon with its recent update), and outdated maps. AT&T Navigator's real-time traffic works well most of the time, even where 3G signal is not available.(Credit: Screenshot by Dong Ngo/CNET) I've just finished testing a GPS navigation app that offers all of those previously unavailable features: the AT&T Navigator (version 1.2i.5). The catch? It doesn't have built-in maps (meaning you will need a working data connection to download the maps in real time) and it requires a monthly subscription of $10. The app itself is free. This is one of the first GPS navigation applications made for the iPhone. It's actually a product by TeleNav and is also available for other cell carriers, including Sprint and

New York Times Site Pop-up Says Your Computer Is Infected
Zott writes 'Apparently, 'some readers' of the New York Times site are getting a bit more with their news: an apparently syndicated adware popup with a faux virus scan of the user's computer indicating they are infected, and a link to go download a fix now. It's entertaining when a Mac user gets it, but clearly downloading an .exe file isn't a good way to keep your computer clean ...' of this story at Slashdot.

Skype Kills Extras Program
Several different sources are reporting that Skype is shutting down their 'Extras' program. The program was designed to help developers release third-party applications for the VoIP service. 'Developers and users will have some adjustment time, though. Skype won't certify any new submissions, but it won't yank support for existing Extras either, that is, until their certificates expire. You'll still be able to install existing Extras through the Windows desktop client, and you'll still see them featured in the Skype shop. Skype will also continue to maintain its public API. Since many Skype Extras are sold to users as premium content, the shut down also has a financial impact for profiting developers. They'll have [...] until December 11, to continue using Skype credit. Developers will need to submit a final invoice by January 25th; after that Skype will shutter its third-party shop.' of this story at Slashdot.
