Bids are coming in for the magazine, which McGraw-Hill has owned for 80 years. Market WatchPremise Alert Aids in Finding Disabled Persons New 'premise alert program' allows families to contact local officials and submit information about someone who may need special attention in an emergency: a child with autism, a parent with Alzheimer's, a teenager who can't hear. cbs2chicago.comLib Dem conference: Sunday Harris's fringe: John Harris blogs from the 2009 Liberal Democrat party conferenceBaking weather, pleasantly little security, and the low hum of a politics that never quite speaks its name: such are my initial impressions of my first Liberal Democrat bunfight, having patrolled the seafront in search of activists to comment on the day's big(ish) story. In fairness, they were a little more excited about it than me - but given that that brassnecked shape-shifter David Cameron has taken space in today's Observer to love-bomb Lib Dem voters (on such key issues as civil liberties and the environment, he said, 'there's barely a cigarette paper between us'), it seemed a device to good to resist. The filmed results will be here tomorrow morning, but the experience brought on a pleasant sense of déjà vu: as happened when I watched the last-but-one Lib Dem leadership contest, activists from such Orange heartlands as Winchester, Hereford and Cambridge steamed with outrage, but often couldn't quite GuardianChildren`s Watch Allows Parents To Track Their Kid pickens writes 'The Telegraph reports that a new wristwatch called num8 has a GPS tracking device and satellite positioning system concealed inside so parents can locate the wearer to within 10 feet with Google maps. The watch sends an alert if it is forcibly removed. The makers of the watch claim it gives peace of mind to parents and makes children more independent. 'Losing your child, if only for a brief moment, leads to a state of panic and makes parents feel powerless. The overriding aim of num8 is to give children their freedom and parents peace of mind,' says a company spokesman. Critics of the watch say tagging children is a step too far in paranoia about child safety. 'Is the world really that unsafe that parents need to track their children electronically? I don't think so,' says Dr Michele Elliott, director of children's charity Kidscape.' of this story at Slashdot. The method could be further developed to combine other technologies such as spintronics and optoelectronics on a silicon chip. It is expected to be commercialized in a couple of years, and allow manufacturers to keep up with Moore's Law despite today's shrinking devices.' of this story at Slashdot. SlashdotCursive Writing Is a Fading Skill — Does It Matter? antdude sends along an AP piece on the decline of the teaching of cursive writing in schools — ramifications of which we've discussed a few times before. 'The decline of cursive is happening as students are doing more and more work on computers, including writing. In 2011, the writing test of the National Assessment of Educational Progress will require 8th and 11th graders to compose on computers, with 4th graders following in 2019. ... Handwriting is increasingly something people do only when they need to make a note to themselves rather than communicate with others, [an educator] said. Students accustomed to using computers to write at home have a hard time seeing the relevance of hours of practicing cursive handwriting. 'I am not sure students have a sense of any reason why they should vest their time and effort in writing a message out manually when it can be sent electronically in seconds.'' of this story at Slashdot. Slashdot60 Years of Cryptography, 1949-2009 Dan Jones writes '2009 marks 60 years since the advent of modern cryptography. It was back in October 1949 when mathematician Claude Shannon published a paper on Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems. According to his employer at the time, Bell Labs, the work transformed cryptography from an art to a science and is generally considered the foundation of modern cryptography. Since then significant developments in secure communications have continued, particularly with the advent of the internet and Web. CIO has a pictorial representation of the past six decades of research and development in encryption technology. Highlights include the design of the first quantum cryptography protocol by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard in 1984, and the EFF's 'Deep Crack' DES code breaker of 1998.' of this story at Slashdot. SlashdotThe Serious Story Behind `The Informant` The Informant opened in theaters on Friday. Although the movie is sometimes played for laughs, the real story was no laughing matter. It's based on a late-1990s case against the conglomerate Archer Daniels Midland. Executives there were accused of orchestrating a worldwide conspiracy to fix prices. Host Liane Hansen speaks to investigative writer Kurt Eichenwald, whose book, The Informant: A True Story, is the subject of the new movie starring Matt Damon. NPREight highlights of Hong Kong HONG KONG - I grew up hearing stories about Hong Kong. My parents lived there until they were teenagers, before moving to America. I knew that before a typhoon, cockroaches flew like mad in the skies. I knew that you could toss coins down to Street vendors and they would throw a snack up to your apartment window. I knew that housing could be so cramped in H-shaped tenements that a whole floor might share a bathroom. But all of that was based on memories from my parents growing up in the '50s and '60s.
