Op sociale netwerksites zoals Facebook en Twitter duiken opvallend veel berichten op met medische gegevens over patiënten. Dat is een overtreding tegen het beroepsgeheim van de medische sector. Dat is de conclusie van een onderzoek van het Veterans Affairs Medical Center uit Washington. Daarbij wordt gesteld dat vooral stagiairs op het internet verhalen en details plaatsen over patiënten. Meer dan de helft van de ondervraagde Amerikaanse medische opleidingsinstituten meldden daarbij gevallen van studenten die ongeloorloofde content op het internet hadden geplaatst. In 10 % van de gevallen was er zelfs sprake van grove inbreuken van de patiënt en de behandelende geneeskundige. In de meeste gevallen ging het om blogs, waarbij soms voldoende details werden gegeven om de patiënt te identificeren.
