Judge attacks `lamentable` MoD
. Court says non-disclosure a 'serious breach' of duty. Evidence from MoD's chief witness 'seriously flawed'The Ministry of Defence was accused today by three high court judges of 'lamentable' behaviour and 'serious breaches' of its duty of candour over the failure to disclose crucial information about allegations of murder and ill-treatment by British soldiers in Iraq in 2004.In a withering attack, they damned the ministry's chief witness - the deputy head of the military police - as lacking all credibility. They described his evidence to the court as 'seriously flawed'.The MoD's failure to conduct a proper investigation of its own into the allegations has forced Bob Ainsworth, the defence secretary, to hold an independent public inquiry, the high court heard. The MoD has already been forced into a public inquiry into the death of Baha Mousa while in the custody of British soldiers in Basra in 2003. Yesterday's case relates to allegations that an Iraqi named al-Sweady was murdered and

Israeli Filmmakers Tackle the Mideast Conflict
A young Arab gasps for breath as he tears down the Street, his feet pounding rhythmically on the asphalt. Omar, who comes from the downtrodden Jaffa neighborhood of Ajami, has just witnessed a killing and he is running for his life. It's early morning, and the streets around Tel Aviv's Court of Justice are deserted. It's an apt metaphor; there is no justice here, only a panicked teenager fleeing his own destiny. In his head, Omar hears the soothing voice of his younger brother, telling him to close his eyes and relax. His breath catches as he turns the corner and trips, falling hard on the pavement. 'On the count of three you'll open your eyes,' his brother's voice promises, 'and find yourself in another place.' But in the Middle East, there is no escape from the realities of hatred, violence, and oppression. Omar, who has been involved in a drug deal gone wrong, arrives at the getaway van, only to find it's locked and he's trapped. 'One.two.three. Open your eyes!' his brother's voice

But in every competition there can only be one winner.'Earlier the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, made an impassioned appeal to delegates, saying Rio's bid represented the hopes of the whole of South America. 'I honestly think it is Brazil's turn,' he said. 'It is South America's bid. This is a continent that has never held the games. It is time to address this imbalance. It is time to lig

Another use for your phone: `augmented reality`
San francisco (AP) -- You're walking down the Street, looking for a good place to eat. You hold up your cell phone and use it like the viewfinder on a camera, so the screen shows what's in front of you. But it also shows things you couldn't see before: Brightly colored markers indicating nearby restaurants and bars....

Lockerbie papers say US paid witness
Scottish detectives discussed secret payments of up to $3m made to witness and his brother, documents claimTwo key figures in the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber were secretly given rewards of up to $3m (£1.9m) in a deal discussed by Scottish detectives and the US government, according to legal papers released today. The claims about the payments were revealed in a dossier of evidence that was intended to be used in an appeal by Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of murdering 270 people in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in 1988.Megrahi abandoned his appeal last month after the Libyan and Scottish governments struck a deal to free him on compassionate grounds because he is terminally ill with prostate cancer. Now in hospital in Tripoli, Megrahi said he wanted the public to see the evidence which he claims would have cleared him.'I continue to protest my innocence - how could I fail to do so?,' he said. 'I have no desire to add to the upset of many people I know are profoun
