Missing the Forest for the Trees
Some articles just make me want to *facepalm*. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in Britain had to pull a number of vanity plates from auction because of the possible offense they can cause. By policy, it bans plates that might suggest 'terrorism, religion, sex or other provocative themes.' One of the combinations banned is 666. It has religious implications. I can see that. But the reason give in this article is that is it 'commonly associated with satanism.' I'm sorry, associated with what? Let me think back. Where does one first find reference to 666? The Bible. Not the Satanic Bible. The Bible. The reference was around 2000 years before much of anyone was calling themselves a Satanist. It is a religious reference, but it's a Christian one.Missing the Forest for the Trees originally appeared on About.com Alternative Religions on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 at 23:51:56.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Cameron asks voters to join `steep climb`
Tory leader rejected calls to 'play it safe' with sombre speech that set out difficult journey ahead for BritainThe tight team around David Cameron and George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, had prepared with care to portray a sober, professional team ready for power. But this week's conference, and today's speech, also marked a highly significant moment in the evolution of the Tory leader. He swept aside the advice of many shadow ministers who said his decisive lead in the polls presented a perfect opportunity to adopt a cautious 'Ming vase' approach.Instead, the leadership decided, in Cameron's words, not to 'play it safe' in the run-up to the election but to set out in bleak terms the scale of the challenge facing the next government in stabilising the public finances. The week's two main speeches, Osborne on Tuesday and Camerontoday yesterday, were the main vehicles for delivering this message, which raised eyebrows even among senior members of the shadow cabinet.Osborne's assignmen
