Why Cloud Storage Is Lousy For Enterprises (and Individuals)
storagedude points to this article at Enterprise Storage Forum which argues that cloud-based storage options have fatal limitations for both businesses and individuals: 'The article makes the argument that high volumes of data and bandwidth limitations make external cloud storage all but useless for enterprises because it could take months to restore the data in a disaster. It also appears to be a consumer problem — the author spent three months replicating 1TB of home data via cable modem to an online backup service.' Seems like those off-site incremental storage firms could dispatch a station wagon full of tapes, for enough money. of this story at Slashdot.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government will soon start handing out the first $4 billion from a pot of stimulus funds intended to spread high-speed internet connections to more rural communities, poor neighborhoods and other pockets of the country clamoring for better access. Willetts - students being let down
Conservative education spokesman says quality must improve to justify rise in feesUniversities are badly failing students with unfit teaching and old-fashioned methods and will have to radically modernise lectures and facilities if they want to raise fees, according to the Conservatives' spokesman on higher education.David Willetts told the Guardian that vice-chancellors are not prepared for the pressure their students will put them under if fees go up and that many have failed to prove students are getting value for money.'There are still too many horror stories I hear when I'm talking to students - issues like academic work not coming back, not being able to contact tutors,' he said.'It's amazing the change in this generation of students. The issue is not fomenting Maoist revolutionaries somewhere. They are much more likely to complain about how crowded seminars are or how slow the response to their dissertation was. Those are the kind of things that young people register.'Students i

Is Valve`s Steam Anti-Competitive?
Absolut187 writes 'Gearbox software CEO Randy Pitchford says Steam's domination of digital distribution is 'dangerous,' and exploits small developers. 'Steam helps us as customers, but it's also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that's not totally fair. ... Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service it's providing. ... There's so much conflict of interest there that it's horrid.' Pitchford's comments came as part of an interview with Maximum PC, and he thinks Valve should spin off Steam to its own company. Is he right? Is there a better answer?' Update: 10/10 at 02:00 GMT by SS: Randy has clarified his remarks in a comment here at Slashdot. He makes it clear that he likes Steam a lot, and for several reasons, but thinks stronger competition would benefit the industry as a whole. of this story at Slashdot.

Bangkok climate talks highlight rifts
Bitter delegates say no agreement on money or emissions cuts means a deal at Copenhagen will be weak at bestGlobal climate change talks came to an end in Bangkok today in an atmosphere of distrust and recrimination, with the rift between rich and poor countries seemingly wider than ever. After two weeks of negotiations there have been no breakthroughs on big issues such as money or emissions cuts. With just five days of negotiating time now left before the concluding talks in Copenhagen in December, delegates said it appeared a weak deal was the most likely outcome, and no deal at all was a possibility. However, President Obama's expected visit to Oslo to receive the Nobel peace prize in the middle of the climate talks raised hopes that he would make the short journey to Copenhagen to galvanise governments.'World leadership is now vital if the talks are not to fail completely. It is inconceivable that Obama could now ignore the climate change talks,' said one diplomat. The citation for
