Government backed Megrahi`s release
. Whitehall supported release to protect ties with Libya . Deal safeguarded trade, says foreign secretaryDavid Miliband has revealed that the UK government supported the decision to free the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing because his death in a Scottish jail would have damaged trade and diplomatic ties to Libya. The foreign secretary disclosed that Libya and Scottish National party ministers were told in advance that the government agreed 'as a matter of policy' that Abdelbaset al-Megrahi should be freed on compassionate grounds because of his terminal cancer. His remarks, made in a statement on the Megrahi affair to MPs on their first day back after the recess, confirm that the government had formally sanctioned the release by making its views known to both sides.Miliband insisted that UK ministers had no power or desire to pressurise the Scottish justice secretary, Kenny MacAskill, to release Megrahi because that was solely a matter for the Scottish legal system. But he would ma

Scientists prove cancer can be passed on in the womb
. First proven case of cells crossing placental barrier. Discovery hailed as vital to research into the diseaseScientists have established beyond doubt that in rare cases cancer can be transmitted in the womb, following the birth of a baby to a woman with leukaemia.A team at the Institute of Cancer Research, a college of the University of London, working with colleagues in Japan, found that the cancer had defied accepted theories of biology. Leukaemia cells had crossed the placenta and spread from the 28-year-old mother to her unborn baby. There have been suspicions for years that cancer could be passed on in the womb. About 17 cases of suspected mother-to-child transmission have been noted - usually leukaemia or melanoma. But until now researchers have been unable to establish whether it had happened and, if so, how.If the cells did cross the placental barrier, the child's immune system should have recognised them as foreign invaders and destroyed them.In the latest case no one knew th

Getting Students To Think At Internet Scale
Hugh Pickens writes 'The NY Times reports that researchers and workers in fields as diverse as biotechnology, astronomy, and computer science will soon find themselves overwhelmed with information — so the next generation of computer scientists will have to learn think in terms of internet scale of petabytes of data. For the most part, university students have used rather modest computing systems to support their studies, but these machines fail to churn through enough data to really challenge and train young minds to ponder the mega-scale problems of tomorrow. 'If they imprint on these small systems, that becomes their frame of reference and what they're always thinking about,' said Jim Spohrer, a director at IBM's Almaden Research Center. This year, the National Science Foundation funded 14 universities that want to teach their students how to grapple with big data questions. Students are beginning to work with data sets like the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, the largest pub

Fils-Aime unimpressed by PSP Go
Nintendo big wig questions SonyNintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has stuck the knife in to Sony following the release of the PSP Go handheld, stating that the system has a 'fundamental concept problem'.The outspoken exec wonders what the real 'benefit' of the digital-only handheld is, presumably shaking off concerns that the device could be a threat to the Nintendo DS.'I have the utmost respect for all our competitors, but it's interesting to try and answer the consumer question of 'What's in it for me?' in that product,' the exec teased, speaking to The Washington Post. Fils-Aime added that Nintendo aren't planning a rival mobile device to Apple's iPhone: 'We don't have a desire to get into the phone space. We think the game business is competitive enough.'
