The head of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), Amr Badawi, told Reuters that 16 firms purchased the documents but did not provide names. Vodafone Egypt CEO Hatem Dowidar said the company was excluded from participating as fixed-line incumbent Telecom Egypt is one of its shareholders. However its other shareholder Vodafone Group has bought the documents and is interested in bidding. The two licences being offered by the government are for bundled internet, fixed-line telephony and cable TV within residential compounds. Alkan Group, an Egyptian firm whose interests include communications and IT, has bought the documents and will look to join a consortium with larger players, an Alkan executive said.
