Blog Carnival: Unusual Places to Stay
I have to admit, I'm a sucker for out-of-the-ordinary hotel accommodations. Give me a Scandinavian ice hotel, an African treehouse or an undersea lodge over a basic hotel any day. And if you agree, you'll want to check out About.com's greatest blog carnival, brought to you by Canada travel guide Jane McLean and About.com's intrepid quirky-hotel-discoverers. Puerto Rico falls a bit short in the uncommon-places-to-stay list, and certainly has no free-swinging spheres to tempt you, but if I had to pick a candidate, it would be Hix Island House, #1 on my list of best hotels in Vieques. When your accommodation choices range from circle, square, to triangle, you qualify for out-of-the-ordinary. And super cool. Party on with Bangalafumenga
If someone invited you to a bangalafumenga in Rio de Janeiro about 100 years ago, you'd have to avoid the police on the way. At that time, the long name meant a secretive samba get-together; samba was repressed and regarded with prejudice. Today, there's nothing hush-hush about Bangalafumenga, a Carnival bloco and band with a passion for eclectic rhythms and a youthful following. You can go to the band's shows at Fundição Progresso, for example. Or you can join the bloco parades in Jardim Botânico - it's fun, and it's free! Castro Theatre
The Castro Theater is a San Francisco institution adored by locals. The stunning art deco theater, built in 1922, was designed by Timothy L. Pflueger (1894-1946) who went on to become a famous Bay Area architect. Beautifully restored and maintained, it is one of the few remaining movie palaces in the nation from the 1920s that is still in operation. The Castro shows a mix of classic, independent, and first-run films as well as musical sing-alongs. Be sure to catch the first evening show, when the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ is played while the audience sings along to 'San Francisco Open Your Golden Gate.' How To Spend a Weekend in New York City
The new york Times Travel section routinely features a 36 Hours column where they present an idea of how to spend 36 hours in a chosen destination. Their hour-by-hour itinerary runs from Friday evening until mid-day on Sunday -- essential hand-holding you through a weekend getaway. I love the confidence of these articles: they make very specific recommendations for hotels, restaurants, and attractions and really maximize a short trip. This week's 36 Hours in New York City has visitors experiencing a show at Lincoln Center, visiting the High Line, shopping in Brooklyn and checking out some of the Lower East Side's art museums and galleries, not to mention eating delicious meals to fuel all the activities. You'll need a vacation from your vacation if you cram all of those things into one weekend, but the good news is you can always rest when you're back home. Weird and Wacky Accommodations Around the World
Although cruise lovers would much rather sleep on the gently rocking bed of a cruise ship at sea, other accommodations are also appealing to those who love all types of travel and travel destinations. I'm not talking just about the marvelous luxury hotels around the world, but also those unique places we love to stay in, if only to share the great stories with our friends and family back home.Jane McLean, the About.com Guide to Canada Travel, has compiled a fascinating list of weird and wacky accommodations from the About.com Travel Channel experts. As expected, the list includes fascinating castles and historical buildings. However, I'm ready to try a straw house in the UK, a Latvian prison, a treehouse in Africa, a trulli house in Italy, and an ice house in Scandinavia. Don't these all sound intriguing?Sleeping Hut at Alaska Dogsled Camp (c) Linda GarrisonWeird and Wacky Accommodations Around the World originally appeared on About.com Cruises on Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 11:05:
