Council loses its lunch
Lunch is no longer on you.Columbia City Council members — munching on taxpayer-paid sandwiches — agreed Wednesday to cut out catered lunches at their meetings as they face a projected $4.3 million shortfall in this year’s budget. The move, which will save about $7,000 a year, is one of several council members have taken to save money, including suspending their $50-a-day salaries for 10 days and reducing their expense accounts. But while council members are losing their lunches, city employees could lose their jobs.Council discussed layoffs for the first time in anticipation of nearly $5 million in additional cuts next budget year, which begins July 1.

Columbia’s finanical distress not as bad during the Great Depression
If you think Columbia is in financial trouble now, just be glad you weren’t a city employee during the Great Depression. In 1933, the city was broke. City officials didn’t have enough money to pay employees’ salaries.Instead, they issued certificates for $10. Employees would buy things with the certificates, and merchants could cash in the certificates on Jan. 1, 1934, for their $10 — plus 4 percent interest.South Carolina historian Walter Edgar said many S.C. cities issued certificates during the Great Depression.“That’s how city governments operated in those days,” Edgar said. “They had to.”
