Columbia officer charged with DUI in Lugoff area
A Columbia police officer was arrested Thursday on drunken driving charges, the S.C. Highway Patrol said. Master Patrol Officer Rodney Fisher was at the Kershaw County Detention Center, charged with DUI, authorities said late Thursday.Fisher was stopped about 2 p.m. on Wildwood Lane near Wateree Elementary School in the Lugoff area after authorities spotted his car when they responded to a report of an erratic driver, Department of Public Safety spokesman Sid Gaulden said.Columbia police spokesman Brick Lewis did not know how long Fisher has worked for the Police Department.

Feds sue Columbia area tax preparer
The federal government has sued a Columbia-area tax preparer on accusations he filed returns claiming $13 million in fraudulent refunds last year, the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday.Some of Winston Able’s clients have been assessed $5,000 penalties for filing frivolous documents with returns, and they might have to pay 20 percent of a refund they improperly claimed — even if they did not receive the requested money from the IRS, the government’s complaint said.“The scheme is part of a growing trend among tax protesters to file frivolous tax returns and forms in an attempt to escape their federal tax obligations and steal from the U.S. Treasury,” a Justice Department news release said.The Justice Department said it wants to stop Able, who lives in Blythewood, from preparing any more federal tax returns. He runs Reliable Services in Columbia near Windsor Lake, the government’s complaint said.Able said Thursday he never sent customers’ d
