For-profit colleges flood S.C.
The number of out-of-state colleges with a south carolina presence has risen sharply over the past decade, giving more options to students who take a nontraditional route to a degree.Twenty-two such schools do business in this state, according to the S.C. Commission on Higher Education, which licenses the schools to operate here.A decade ago, there were 10 out-of-state schools licensed to educate students here.“There has been a proliferation of them,” said Denny Ciganovic, director of the career center at the College of Charleston. “A lot of them serve the military.”South Carolina has a large military presence. Those service members are subject to transfer and take advantage of the flexibility of schools that offer courses online as well as in person at campuses across the country.

Retiree day serves those who served
Like the swallows that return every spring to Capistrano, hundreds of military veterans flocked to Fort Jackson on Saturday for the post’s annual Military Retiree Appreciation Day.While the event aimed to bring retirees up to speed on the latest services and benefits available at the Columbia post, it also served as a reunion of sorts. Many retirees wore ball caps identifying the wars in which they fought — World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm.Others sported purple or blue golf shirts representing veterans groups: purple for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and blue for the American Legion. Then there was the black Stetson worn by James Alford, a retired Army command sergeant major and veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
